About PSL
Phillips & Smith Limited (PSL) is 100% New Zealand owned and operated since 1913.
PSL began life as a non-ferrous foundry and engineering workshop producing a range of fittings used mostly in the Dairy industry, with some of these products still available today.
During the early to mid 1960's, Government import restrictions were effecting the importing of fire fighting hardware into New Zealand, and PSL were asked to commence manufacture and design of these products for the New Zealand market. With the subsequent move by the dairy industry to predominantly stainless steel, the Company's main focus and operation became fire fighting hardware manufacturing and engineering, with the factory based in Auckland.
A strong distribution business now supports this operation both nationally and via our Sydney office for the Australian market. International sales to some 20 countries around the world are serviced by our highly experienced Export Team in New Zealand and also a number of agents in key overseas markets.
Aluminium and bronze castings are now sourced from a number of certified and assessed suppliers, inspected upon arrival to ensure compliance to our strict quality standards before being passed to production for further processing.
A large heat treatment oven is available for aluminium alloys, with a data logging of heat monitoring to ensure consistent results.
The machine shop operates highly accurate, high speed Mazak Turning Centres and several CNC lathes, for fast and precise machining work. Short set-up times are a key benefit, giving 
excellent flexibility. Components can be milled and drilled all in one operation, which saves handling costs too.
The products are finished in the metal polishing shop if required, and can be tested by either pneumatic or hydraulic test rigs in the assembly area, before having the final Quality Assurance stamp, and being despatched.
Quality - The company is proud to be the first fire equipment manufacturer in the country to be awarded ISO 9002 Quality Assurance Certified Approval covering all aspects of production and administration. This has been subsequently upgraded to ISO9001:2008 Quality Management Standard to include aspects of design and product development, and in May 2009 the Company also achieved two additional Standards AS/NZS 4801:2001 for Health and Safety Management and ISO14001:2004 for Environmental Management - believed to be the first time a Company in New Zealand to have been accredited to all these three Standards at the same time.
In 2004 the sister companies of Pelican Products NZ Ltd and Amerex NZ Ltd were merged into Phillips & Smith Ltd and the group was re-branded under the name of PSL. Our business focus has been expanded to manufacture and supply various types of fire & safety products to the New Zealand, Asia and Pacific markets, and more recently into areas of South East Asia and the Middle East.
A prime strength of the company has always been the assembly of total package solutions for new projects or major fire situations. A large number of these have been very successfully completed. This ability comes from the extensive knowledge and experience of the PSL staff, coupled with excellent agencies and contacts.
The company is honoured to be distributors in New Zealand, the Pacific Islands and in some cases Australia for many prestigious suppliers as per our Agencies page. These supplier products are also distributed in many South East Asian countries as agency agreements permit. The company has been exporting successfully for a number of years, and in 1984 won the prestigious New Zealand Government Export Award.
PSL also work with a number of Fire and Safety organisations in New Zealand, promoting education and support to those actively involved in the industry. We are also proud to have a number of professional and volunteer FireFighters employed in PSL
