Six Circumnavigate New Zealand in IRB's
To celebrate the centenary of Surf Life Saving, Six Surf Lifeguards decided to embark on the first complete circumnavigation of New Zealand in an Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) less than four metres in length.
During January and February 2011, the Six Surf Lifeguards undertook their voyage in a series of 5200kms, 32 legs in 34 days. At the completion of each leg the crew came to shore, landing at not only the country's most popular surf beaches, but also at some of the most remote. It was a chance for lifeguards, surf clubs and all New Zealanders to celebrate 100 years of safer beaches.
The crew chose to use Nanuk Professional Protective cases to house their valuable electronic equipment, phones, hand held GPS, VHF marine radio’s, Kordia GPS tracking gear and a Garmin GPS navigation plotter. All were in foam lined cases strapped to the bottom on the IRB’s. The Garmin GPS Navigation plotter is strapped on top of the fuel tank and left open with the unit mounted to the waterproof panel kit, the power supply was housed inside and sealed away from the weather
Congratulations from the team at PSL for a successful voyage.
